Canadian Blood Services gains support from Virtual Causeway Employees

Canadian Blood Services hosted Waterloo region's First Annual High Tech Blood Donor Challenge in 2003. Over 40 companies from Waterloo region's high tech sector participated in this challenge. Employees earned points for their companies by donating blood themselves or by recruiting friends and family to donate on their behalf.

Virtual Causeway has had great employee involvement for this High-Tech Blood Donor Challenge. Their efforts have resulted in over 50% of their employees donating blood; many of which were first time donors. Employees also recruited friends and family to donate on their behalf. VC employees competed against other technology companies in the area, including IBM and RIM. Together, the cohesive efforts of all participating companies helped to alleviate the growing demand for blood in the region.

As a result of advances in medicine and an aging population, the demand for blood is growing. By the end of 2005, Canadians will need to be donating blood at a rate of one million units a year in order to meet the needs of patients. That means increasing the number of Canadians who donate from 3.5 to 5 per cent of the eligible population.

Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the blood supply in all provinces and territories outside of Quebec and operates the country's Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry. CBS operates 40 permanent collection sites and more than 10,000 donor clinics annually.
